Exploring my goals for 2019 as I get ready to adventure around the world.
“Soon it got dusk, a grapey dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgundy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.”
― Jack Kerouac, On the Road
I’ve always been drawn to sunsets. The beauty of a blazing crimson sun swallowed into the earth or the depths of the ocean is awe-inspiring. There’s nothing quite like the warm feeling you get inside after a full day of laughter, adventures, and fun surrounded by the people you love. And with each setting sun, there’s the thrill of what’s to come next – an evening out with friends, a new day filled with the promise of the unknown, or far-flung travels to be had. It’s exhilarating, thought-provoking, and something I just can’t get enough of.
The end of a year reminds me of a sunset – the end of something complex and beautiful and inspiring, and the start of something new. It’s a chance to reflect on our bright moments, mourn those we’ve lost, and dream of what the future will bring. I find that this introspection plays an important role to the year ahead – a moment to reminisce, plan, and take action.
Looking Back:
For me, this year has been quite a roller coaster of travels, emotions, and change. I was lucky to explore Iceland and Ireland on another solo trip, visit friends and family in 8 different states, watch over 30 concerts, attend 5 music festivals, and so much more. Late in the year, I left my corporate career and decided to travel the world full time in 2019. Did I mention that I also came out of the closet?
It’s safe to say that 2018 was filled to the brim. I found growth in past mistakes and learned to follow my heart. I decided to live more intentionally and honestly, avoided my phone as much as possible, and lived in the present. Through all of these things I found ready for whatever adventure might find me next.
Looking Ahead:
With the dawn of a new year approaching, I’m eager to explore the world and discover a little bit more about myself. I’m not typically one for resolutions, but I find that they can be grounding and add purpose to my travels. I came up with a few below, and challenge you to jot down a few for yourself!
- Be open. Traveling solo can be quite intimidating. So much of the world is different from what we grow up accustomed to, that it can quickly be overwhelming. Keeping an open mind unlocks so many doors in the world, and will let me explore it in such deeper ways. It’s amazing what you will find with an open mind and open heart.
- Be mindful. It’s so easy to get swept up in the world of social media and lost in all of the distractions surrounding us. I plan to take time to myself, meditate, and use my time wisely. Life is far too short, and I hate the thought of wasting it behind a screen.
- Be queer. As someone who was stuck in the closet for 24 years, I’m excited to see the world through different eyes. I spent so much time hiding my sexuality, it’s about time I live proudly and openly. I plan on sharing my story with whoever will listen, and hope to learn about others in the LGBTQ+ community around the world.
These might be simple (and pretty vague), but it’s a start. They will likely grow and change, but that’s life. Remember, each sunset starts out looking different than how it ends!
I would love to hear your resolutions! Comment below some of your goals for 2019 🙂
