Some tips for one of my favorite cities – land of creole food, strong drinks, and plenty of soul.
“Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans
And miss it each night and day
I know I’m not wrong this feeling’s gettin’ stronger
The longer I stay away”
Louis Armstrong – Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans
There’s something enchanting about New Orleans. It’s a city so full of soul, hardship, flavor, food, drinks, and history. I first visited NOLA when I was 16 and fell in love. I ended up making my way back three times since then, and I always leave the city yearning to stay. It’s a huge city with so much to see, eat, and drink, so I’m going to try my best to share my favorites.
Things to do:
NOLA is a very walkable city. I highly suggest finding an Airbnb in the heart of the French Quarter or in the nearby Marigny district, where you can walk to many of the popular sights. One of my favorite things to do in the city is to simply stroll around town, exploring new streets and taking in all the city has to offer. Smell something good coming out of a cafe? Walk in and try it. Hear great live music coming from a dive bar? Stop in for a drink. You’ll find plenty of action in the French Quarter, and beautiful homes to ogle at along the way.
You’ll pass by Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter, and it’s always full of local artisans and entertainment. Spend some time walking around here and step into the St. Louis Cathedral to see a beautiful, historic church built in the 1700’s.
If you’re looking to dig into the history of NOLA and make sure you don’t miss something while perusing the shops and cafes, check out Free Tours by Foot, where they’ll take you around the city for a nominal tip. It’s a great way to get a local’s perspective and to meet fellow travelers.
When looking at dates to travel to New Orleans, be sure to check out their festival and parade calendar to see what events are happening in town. There always seems to be a wild parade or some party going on in the city, and you won’t want to miss it. I was lucky to be their for one of the weekends of Mardi Gras, and even ended up in a dog parade, Krewe of Barkus, on accident!
Things to Eat:
I’ll never get over how good the food in NOLA is. From amazing Creole food to experimental modern restaurants, this city is the foodie’s paradise. Because life is short and you should get dessert first, head to Café Du Monde for a beignet and a café au lait. If the inevitable long lines frighten you, check out Morning Call in the beautiful City Park for a more relaxing beignet experience. Either way, this combo is hard to beat- you’ll thank me later.
NOLA has some amazing brunch spots. One of my favorites was the New Orleans Cake Cafe & Bakery. Their crab omelet was to die for, and they also have amazing Shrimp & Grits. Who Dat Coffee Cafe in the Marigny has amazing Eggs Benny’s and is super LGBT friendly. Another favorite for locals and tourists alike is Elizabeth’s, a down-home spot in the Bywater neighborhood that serves strong Mimosas and delicious food. For a quick, healthy bite, check out Satsuma Cafe where they serve farm-fresh food, juices and coffee in a funky setting.
For lunch, head over to Peche Seafood Grill for fantastic oysters and great seafood with an awesome selection of local beers. You also have to try a Po’ Boy while in town, and there are many spots to get a good one. Follow the link for the best places to get one.
For dinner, consider heading to The Franklin for some modern American food and scrumptious cocktails. If you’re in the mood for Italian, check out Mariza, located in a beautiful old brick warehouse in the Bywater.
Things to Drink:
From a Hurricane on Bourbon Street to a nice glass of wine on a patio, NOLA has it all when it comes to libations. The great thing about New Orleans is that there are no open container laws – you’re welcome to take a drink to-go while you walk around. One of my favorite things is to take a refreshing, icy drink to-go and enjoy the sunshine and lively streets of the city.
Be sure to head to Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar for frozen Hurricane to get you started. Lafitte’s is the oldest structure used as a bar in the US, so you can always say you’re taking in some history as you sip down your strong drink. Located right on Bourbon Street (party central), it’s a must-do. Also be sure to head to Lucy’s downtown for a shark attack drink and a fun vibe. Otherwise, just pop in to any bar in the French Quarter and you’ll be sure to find a good time. A favorite spot for live music and a more authentic vibe is Frenchmen Street, just a few blocks away from Jackson Square.
If you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe, head to Bacchanal for amazing wine selections, good food, and live music in an amazing backyard patio setting. This is my absolute favorite spot in NOLA for drinks, conversation, and a good way to start the night with friends and family.
I keep finding myself heading down to NOLA to enjoy the incredible people, beautiful sights, and delicious food. If you find yourself there, let me know and I’d be happy to offer up some more advice! Cheers.
